01

Regular verbs

We use the simple past for finished actions in the past. Many regular verbs end in -ed.

work → workedwatch → watchedvisit → visited
02

Irregular verbs

Some verbs do not use -ed. They have a different past form that we need to learn.

go → wenthave → hadeat → atesee → saw
03

Was & Were

Was and were are the past forms of be. Use was with I, he, she, and it. Use were with you, we, and they.

I was tired. She was at school. They were at home.
04

Negative sentences

For many negative simple past sentences, use didn't + the base form of the verb.

I went to work.I didn't go to work.She didn't watch TV.
05

Questions with Did

To ask about a past action, use Did + person + the base form of the verb.
